Saltwater vs. Chlorine Pools in Florida

Softer feel, lower chemical costs, easier on eyes — but salt systems have tradeoffs. Here's how the two systems compare for Tampa Bay homeowners.
Saltwater pools don't actually skip chlorine — they generate it on demand from dissolved salt via a cell in the equipment pad. The water feels softer, doesn't sting eyes, and doesn't smell like a hotel pool. Ongoing chemical costs drop because you're not hauling home jugs of liquid chlorine every week.
The tradeoffs: the salt cell itself is a wear item that runs $500–$900 to replace every 5–7 years. Salt is mildly corrosive to certain metals and natural stone coping, so material selection matters. And the initial equipment cost is higher than a traditional chlorine setup by around $1,500–$2,500.
For most Tampa Bay families the softer water and lower maintenance overhead are worth it. If you have a screen cage with untreated aluminum or a natural stone deck without a proper sealer, we'll flag those before recommending salt.
