Homeowner Guide

Building an equipment pad that fits your pool

The equipment pad is the part of your pool nobody notices until it stops working. Get the sizing and layout right and the pool runs quietly for years; get it wrong and you spend the next decade fighting flow, heat, and error codes. On Tampa Bay projects we standardize on Jandy because the ecosystem talks to itself — pumps, filters, heaters, sanitizers, and lights all wire into a single automation system.

Here’s how the pieces fit together and what to walk through with your designer.

Variable-speed pumps

Variable-speed pumps replaced single-speed pumps on almost every new build for a reason: you can turn them down for daily filtration and only ramp them up when you’re running a heater, spa, or water feature. Right-sizing matters — a pump too small starves your features, one too large wastes energy and shortens filter life. We size against your total dynamic head at design.

Filters

Cartridge filters (Jandy CV, CL, CS) are the go-to for most Tampa Bay pools — simple, no backwash water waste, and easy to service. DE and sand are the right pick for specific yards. Filter size is matched to pump flow so you don’t need to clean it every weekend.

Sanitation

Salt chlorination (Jandy TruClear, AquaPure Ei) generates chlorine from dissolved salt so you skip the weekly tab hauling and stabilizer creep. It’s the default choice on new residential builds unless there’s a specific reason to run traditional chlorine. Chemistry still matters — a salt cell is a sanitizer, not a chemistry manager.

Heating: gas heaters vs. heat pumps

Gas heaters (Jandy JXiQ, JXi, Hi-E2) heat fast — useful for spas and for pools that only warm up on weekends. Heat pumps (Jandy VersaTemp) heat more gradually but with lower running cost when temperatures are mild, which is a lot of the Tampa Bay calendar. The right pick depends on how you actually use the pool: spa-first families lean gas; year-round swimmers often layer heat pump plus gas for the coldest weeks.

Automation

A Jandy AquaLink system puts every piece of equipment — pump speeds, heater, salt cell, lights, water features, fire bowls — on your phone. Schedule filtration overnight, set the spa to heat before you get home, and shut fire down remotely. It’s the single upgrade homeowners tell us they’d never build without a second time.

Lighting: pool and landscape

Nicheless LED lights (Jandy WaterColors HydroCool, Infinite WaterColors) install with a smaller cutout than traditional niche lights and cover the pool in even color. Landscape lighting on the deck, palms, and equipment wall extends the yard into evening and highlights features you paid for — a water wall or fire bowl looks twice as good with the right uplight aimed at it.
