Homeowner Guide
The interior finish is the layer you swim against, the color of the water, and the surface that stands up to Tampa Bay’s year-round pool season. Most of our custom pools use PebbleTec finishes because the aggregates hold up well to Florida sun and pool chemistry, and because the finish family has real range — from tumbled quartz that feels almost smooth to large-pebble textures that read as a natural swimming hole.
A finish selection can look completely different in a sample cup than it does in nine thousand gallons of water. Below are the things to weigh so the color you pick on Saturday is still the color you love next summer.
PebbleQuartz blends fine quartz crystal into the plaster matrix for a smoother feel and slightly brighter, more reflective water color. It’s a nice fit for contemporary Tampa Bay pools where you want the water to read clean and clear, and for homeowners who prefer a smoother surface underfoot.
PebbleSheen is the most-requested finish we install. The polished, tumbled aggregate gives the water a rich color without the coarser feel of a full-size pebble. It works with almost every design style — from classic geometric pools to the freeform lagoon look.
Classic PebbleTec uses larger exposed pebbles for a textured, natural look. It’s the go-to for homeowners who want the water to feel like a swim in a spring or lake and who like a bit more grip on stairs and sun shelves. Expect a more pronounced texture on your feet than quartz or PebbleSheen.
A dry 4-inch sample tile shows about 40–60% of the story. The final water color depends on the finish color, the water depth, the sunlight on your yard, the shape of the pool, and the surrounding decking and tile. Darker finishes generally read deeper and warmer; lighter finishes read more tropical. Always view a sample wet, in daylight, next to your intended waterline tile before you commit.
All three finish families are engineered for chlorinated and salt pools. Long-term appearance is driven more by consistent water chemistry than by the finish itself — keeping pH, alkalinity, and calcium in balance protects the surface. Your Wahoo service tech will walk you through the startup schedule after plaster and the maintenance rhythm afterward.
Before signing off, we deliver samples so you can lay the finish, waterline tile, coping, and decking together in your actual backyard. Look at them under morning and afternoon light. Photograph them next to the house. Small palette shifts read very differently at scale — it’s worth an extra day to be sure.
Our designers walk Tampa Bay homeowners through samples in person, compare options against your yard, sun exposure, and budget, and pull it together into one cohesive plan. Book a consultation and we’ll bring the samples to you.
